Archaeological Museum of Pella : “Macedonian Treasures”

THE EXHIBITION “MACEDONIAN TREASURES” WILL BE ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF PELLA UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30th 2015.

More than 500 precious objects, found during archaeological excavations in Macedonia in the last 25 years, constitute this new exhibition; gold wreaths, gold masks, jewellery, arms, sculpture, metal, alabaster and clay vases and other artifacts from the rich cemeteries of Aigai and Archontiko, dating from the 6th to the 4th centuries BC, are presented for the first time in a temporary exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Pella.

The aim of the exhibition is to show aspects of the Macedonian culture of the Archaic and early Classical times, the period of great changes, when the basis for the establishment of the Macedonian kingdom was set. All these fragments of memory help the visitor to get to know the ancestors of kings Philip II and Alexander the Great.

The masterpiece of the exhibition is the famous “lady of Aigai” (530 – 495 BC), queen and prime priestess of the Macedonians; she is presented with all her gold jewellery and the gold sheets which decorated her clothes. On the other side of the room, the gold- covered warriors of Archontiko are presented with their impressive arms and the mysterious gold masks or sheets which covered their eyes, their mouth and their hands. Next to them, the women of Archontiko, with gold jewellery and gold sheets for their garments, reveal their status and role in the early Macedonian societies of the Archaic period.

Alexander the Great, born at the palace of the capital of Macedon, Pella, is not absent from the Archaeological Museum of Pella. The new photographic exhibition, “Images of Alexander the Great”, at the entrance of the Museum, presents the ways various civilizations perceived and represented the Macedonian king, who entered the sphere of myth.

Mehr als 500 Schätze aus den Grabungen der letzten 25 Jahren in Makedonien werden im Archäologischen Museum in Pella im Rahmen einer Ausstellung mit dem Titel “Makedonische Schätze“ zum ersten Mal in Griechenland präsentiert.

Die Ausstellung wird vom 05. September 2014 bis zum 30. September 2015 gezeigt. Einige der Objekte wurden schon im Ashmolean Museum in Oxford und im Louvre in Paris der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt.

Goldene Kränze, Diademe, Masken, Mund-, und Augenblätter, Schmuck, einzigartige Skulpturen sowie Metall-, Fayence- und Tongefäße aus den Nekropolen archaisch-klassischer Zeit (7.-4. Jh. v. Chr.), die in Aigai und Archontiko entdeckt wurden, gewähren dem Besucher einen Einblick in die Kultur Makedoniens. In dieser Zeit wurden die Grundlagen für die Errichtung des makedonischen Königreiches geschaffen.

Die berühmte “Lady von Aigai”, Königin und Priesterin der Makedonier, mit ihrer reich geschmückten Kleidung stellt eines der wichtigsten Exponate dar. Ihr gegenüber stehen die Krieger von Archontiko mit ihren Waffen und geheimnisvollen Goldblättern auf dem Gesicht, Zeichen ihrer hohen sozialen Stellung.
