Progress elusive in FYROM name dispute

December 18, 2015

Despite claiming progress on refugee management and a series of secondary issues, Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) Thursday admitted that substantial differences remain in resolving the nearly 25-year name dispute between the two Balkan neighbors.

“There are huge mountains between us,” FYROM Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki said after talks with his Greek counterpart Nikos Kotzias in Athens. “The creation of false expectation is in no one’s interest,” he said.

Poposki said that his government has “the political duty not to agree to just any solution,” adding that any name change would have to be approved in a national referendum.

Kotzias said the two sides were seeking “an honorable compromise that combats irredentism and extremist nationalism on both sides.”

Athens has disputed the Balkan state’s use of the name “Macedonia,” adopted after Skopje declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, arguing it implies territorial claims to Greece’s northern province with the same name. It has in response blocked its neighbor’s EU and NATO ambitions.

The two sides, which have had to work together in dealing with the northbound refugee flow through their common border near Idomeni, in northern Greece, pointed to further cooperation in the area.

“We all need to ensure the safe and humanitarian handling of these people,” said Poposki, adding that “fences cannot be a long-term solution.”

“When there is a full system for correct registration, we won’t need to put up obstacles,” said Poposki, who also met with Alternate Citizens’ Protection Minister Nikos Toskas.

Stressing that Greece is the biggest investor in FYROM, Kotzias hailed the success of confidence-building measures between the two countries which are being developed in a wide range of sectors including the economy, culture and education.

Former FYROM’s Interior Minister L. Frckovski : “Drop the Dilemma, We live in Dictatorship”

February 2, 2015

Skopje, FYROM – Accusations against the opposition leader is a normal development of the dictatorship process in FYROM, stated  former Interior Minister Ljubomir Frckovski in “Fokus”. According to him, there shouldn’t be any doubt whether people in FYROM live in dictatorship.

Everything came into place. The publication of the government’s corrupted activities was portrayed as coup d’etat. We have a perversion in the system. How is it possible someone to be held responsible for ‘coup d’etat’ if he publically speaks that the government is corrupted?” said Frckovski.

He added that Gruevski is taking advantage of the Government, the judiciary and now he threatens Zaev with criminal charges in public.

Frckovski also said that he expects the international community, which stands for European values, not to keep silent but to react.

Lajm: FYROM to include “Ancient Macedonian language” in the educational process?

December 24, 2013

Antiquization in FYROM is likely to resume with the  introduction of the “Ancient Macedonian Language” in the educational process according to the newspaper Lajm.

With the end of “Skopje 2014” project, the process of construction of monuments is expected to end, FYROM’s PM Nikola Gruevski recently announced in an interview with Bosnian television BH1.

However, FYROM’s government sources told the Albanian newspaper Lajm that this will not finalize the antiquization process. Namely, another new step is being announced. Entry of the “ancient Macedonian language,” that is to say the “language of Alexander” in the educational process, sources from the Ministry of Culture said.

[pullquote]Antiquization in FYROM after the end of the“Skopje 2014” project  is likely to resume with the  introduction of the “Ancient Macedonian Language” in the educational process according to the newspaper Lajm.[/pullquote]

This process was almost at the end, but was interrupted by the arrest of the former Director of the Cultural Heritage Protection, Pasko Kuzman. However it will certainly continue in the future “, emphasized sources who insist to remain anonymous.

They explain several more details about this project.

First its implementation at faculties is to start in order to create cadres that will be able to teach in elementary and secondary schools and with time, its presence in education is planned to be bigger,” anonymous sources said.

But what was “the language of Alexander”?

Newspaper claims that according to Albanian historians, it is allegedly the Illyrian language, namely the “old-Albanian language”.

This is also proven by the recent documents reveals and if they have pretensions for the “language of Alexander,” this should concern Albanians more than the Greeks,” historian Skender Hasani said.

However, according to the newspaper again, “there is a possibility for the old-Greek language, which Alexander the Great learned from Aristotle, to be the “language of Alexander” or the ancient Macedonian language“.

FYROM’s Government says that this issue has still not been reviewed, the article says. The possible introduction of the “language of Alexander” in education has the goal to prove the direct connection between FYROM’s Slavs and the ancient Macedonians. It will not only complicate the situation between Skopje and Athens but it will also cause an internal division among FYROM’s intellectuals.

FYROM’s Albanians: “Tsar Dusan’s Monument Aims At Provoking Albanians”

December 4, 2013

Tsar Dusan

The monument of Serbian Tsar Dusan as a part of the project “Skopje 2014” angered Albanians in FYROM.

According to the publicist Kim Mehmeti, the monument was mounted for his “merits” in cleaning Skopje from Albanians.

He carried out the first “cleaning” of Albanians while the country’s politics recognizes this as a merit,” Mehmeti said.

According to him, it should not surprise us “if one day a monument of Nikola Gruevski is erected because he is known for the same deeds too.

Historian Nebi Dervisi stated that the mounting of this monument is aimed at provoking Albanians.

“Tsar Dusan killed and massacred thousands of Albanians in Skopje,” Dervisi stated.

He explained that the intellectuals and historians reacted against this fascist project but failed to get support. The mounting of the monuments caused reactions with the opposition.

For instance, RDK claimed that the ruling parties approve, as they say, the Serbian occupation of the territories with Albanian majority.

On the other hand, SDSM said that this act is problematic from an ideological aspect and it is a new unnecessary cost from the state budget.
